How Do You Pack A Pipe For Smoking?

By following these steps, you should have a properly packaged smoking pipe ready to be lit and smoked. Start by lightly pouring tobacco into the pipe until it fills up to the rim of the bowl.

Keep in mind that you want the tobacco to burn from top to bottom, all the way to the bottom of the bowl. After filling with a small amount of tobacco, gently push the tobacco down with the tamper. Carefully fill the pipe to the top and, using tamper, lightly tamp the tobacco. Lightly fill the pipe with tobacco by dropping threads into the bowl of the pipe until the bowl of the pipe is filled to the top.

Holding the pipe in one hand, take some tobacco with the other and let it drip into the bowl of the pipe, repeating this until the bowl is filled with loose tobacco. Sprinkle some more tobacco on top, loosely, and squeeze the bowl of the pipe just below the rim of the bowl. Using the swab again, squeeze the tobacco until it is flush with the top of the bowl. Take a rammer/pipe nail/etc. and LIGHTLY press the tobacco into the bowl to squeeze it out until half of the tobacco fills the bowl of your pipe.

Take the second pinch of tobacco to fill the remaining 1/2 cup and press firmly. Fill the pipe to the top of the bowl with loose tobacco, filling slightly. Instead of filling the tube in three layers, only fill the bowl twice. Some people recommend filling a new pipe only one-third to one-half for the first multiple puffs, and then filling the bowl a little more with each puff.

For straight-walled bowls, you will need to squeeze gently until half of the tobacco fills the bowl. You will know that the cup is full when the tobacco is half or two thirds of the way to the top and feels bouncy to the touch. Once you've filled your cup to perfection, just add some more tobacco on top. Start feeding the pipe by gravity until it overflows (spray loose tobacco into the chamber until it accumulates on top).

At this point, take your finger or pipe tamper and press down on the loose tobacco more, but not too much, than on the previous pack. There may be a little resistance this time, but if you find it difficult to suck on the pipe, quit tobacco and start over. Move the new lighter in a circular motion so that the tobacco ignites evenly. If the pipe gets too hot in your hand, turn it off and on again, as excessive burning can change the flavor of the tobacco.

If you pack lightly, the lower shredded tobacco will not catch fire and burn unevenly. If the pipe sucks like an empty straw, it's too loose (squeeze it, add more shredded tobacco); if it's like sucking on a milkshake with a straw, then it's wrapped too thick (with a thin nail in the tobacco Poke a hole in the middle; I usually still do that even if it's packed properly, just for better airflow). Don't pack the weed too tightly or you'll have a hard time getting the smoke out of the bowl and into the pipe. Filling and packing a pipe in preparation for smoking involves squeezing the tobacco into the bowl loose enough to allow for an even burn and easy puff, but tight enough so that the burn continues through the bowl with minimal relighting.

In the most common packaging method, tobacco is added to the pipe cup in multiple batches, each batch being pressed until the mixture has a uniform density that optimizes airflow (which is difficult to measure without practice). An alternative packaging method, called the Franck method, involves lowering the tobacco slightly into the pipe, after which a large cork is carefully inserted into the bowl all at once. Twist (which does not include dancing during pipe preparation) is a packaging method where you take a bowl of tobacco and roll it into a tobacco cap or twist. A plectrum is a narrow needle that can be used to clear debris from the leg or to aerate well-packed tobacco (because it is sharp and can scratch the bowl of the pipe, it should not be used for scraping).

Consider investing in a pipe tool so you can easily squeeze the tobacco into place. This process works because it ensures uniform tobacco packaging from the top of the chamber to the bottom of the tube chamber.

Pressing During smoking, ash residues form on the surface of the tobacco. With proper pressing you will get a fresher and drier smoke, the cap you form will create an oven effect that pre-cooks the remaining tobacco and your pipe will last longer. If you've followed our packaging guide correctly, make sure you properly char your tobacco before actually lighting it, as detailed in our pipe lighting guide.

Loosely fill the bowl with tobacco and lightly press it down with the tamper. Performing the movement, make a series of shallow throws. Most tobaccos swell at this point and slightly overfill the bowl of the pipe.
